There are alot of interesting informational shows out now and what is really great about them is that they are showing viewers possible mistakes before the homeowner makes the the mistake. My wife loves Rehab Addict with Nicole Curtis and I like Holmes on Homes with Mike Holmes. Due to his show, home owners are more conscious and aware of contracters who will rip them off through price and unacceptable, disappointing work. The most scary is many of the homeowners on the show, were left with dangerous living conditions they were not even aware of.

    • Holmes on Homes- second vote for it! We need to check that out!

I enjoy all DYI shows because it gives me a lot of different ideas on a lot of things to piddle with. Like redoing my kitchen into a coca cola diner, with black and white countertops, and sheet metal backsplash (great for magnets) Most of which was recycled materials.

    • Wait WHAT Janis?! Your kitchen looks like a Coca-Cola Diner??! WE HAVE TO SEE THIS! Where can we see pictures?!

I watch Ron Hazelton on line cause he explains stuff really well and makes it look easy. He is experienced.

    • We love Ron Hazelton’s stuff! Watched him fix a grill not long ago to help us with a burner problem!

I really enjoy Holmes on Homes, a great show that educates homeowners about the dangers of hiring shady, unlicensed, and inexperienced contractors.

    • Oh my! Haven’t seen that one, we’ll have to check it out. Nothing worse than a shady contractor!

It’s got to be American Restorations??? How cool is that show?

  • What a tough decision! I could still watch the old “this Old House” all day long to see the bones of those lovely homes. Loved Made in America when it was on. But for my DIY, thrifty, ‘hack’ ideas it’s fun to turn on a Property Bros marathon! I love it when there is a budget crisis and they have to get thrifty w ‘real people’ supplies like butcher block!!

    • Property Brothers is a favorite of ours as well! Do you like Brother vs. Brother?

The New Yankee Workshop is and has been one of my all time favorite shows to watch. I was about 10 0r 11 when I first seen it and I was amazed at all the neat things this man could do. I had rather watch him build furniture and such than to watch cartoons. Even though the show ended I still go to http://www.newyankee.com/ and watch past videos because he was one who could definitely explain step by step of what to do and was very clear at giving directions. I am back in college and hope his plans can help me out in Cabinet II class :) (It is a class where I have to build a project using plans)

    • Thank you so much for sharing this!! We hadn’t see it. We’ll definitely be looking to these videos for help on projects in the future!

Why watch TV when ya’ can go out to the shop and tinker for real? A lot less commercials, better music and easy beer access from that old beat up fridge I re-built…

    • You’re right Richard! :) How long did it take you to restore that fridge?!

Horsepower TV..Why?..as Tim Allen says MORE POWER (sorry,I couldn’t resist a Home Improvement reference)..also I love watching them re-build engines & then add on super chargers, beefier suspensions, better brakes, big tires, performance exhausts..etc..They take you through it step by step & it’s really easy to understand..Plus they have some awesome muscle cars..A ’68 Camaro RS/SS tops my list.

    • LOL! Tim “The Toolman” Taylor is so very wise! We’ll have to check this out- so glad that you find it both entertaining AND informative! The best of reality TV, really!

This old house….explans things really well…and I Love old homes

I like any of the shows where the home owners take advice from “pros” and completely destroy the look and character of their home. It really irks me when I see anyone slapping paint on a natural stone or brick fireplace. Same goes for quality (oak, maple, cherry, etc.) kitchen cabinets and the very ornate original colonial trim. The “pros” seem to consider this an update, I consider it a crime !!

    • Oh man! If you had your OWN show, Charlie, what would it be called??!

How It’s Made because of its straightforward simplicity.

  • I really liked “American Chopper” … I did’nt care for Senior’s ridiculous bikes too much, but I liked Junior and Vinnie’s work a lot!

    • Oh yes, that’s a GREAT one! Definitely a source of inspiration!

The History Channel’s American Restoration. It recreates items and memories of yesteryear, the times of early youth through those times of the more recent, yet distant, past. Of items that are now gone, having become obsolete, no longer used or made. Many of the recreations or restorations are of personal interest as I once owned, used or knew of them through friends or family.

    • We love that one, too! We loved the 1800s barber pole, and the old coke cooler! Have you had a favorite item that was on there?

Oh, I could easily say all of them, but any I guess that relied more on mechanical “innards” (penny scales)as opposed to electrical (pinball machines) but probably the space rocket sliding board, the same kind that I once played on.

      • That’s a great one! We will definitely check that out! :)

My favorite show is kitchen crashers. I would love for my kitchen to be redone but at least watching the show I get great ideas for do it yourself design and creative storage

    • Oh yes! Inspiration abound. Have you taken any of that and applied it to your own kitchen?

I’ll generally tune in for a topic, not a personality. So no “go to” show really.

    • That makes sense! Have you seen any projects on TV that helped you on your own real life projects??
